Green energy from thin air - The advantages of the Sanyo Air Source Heat Pump
Nowadays air source heat pumps are widely used for heating (and cooling) the home in North America and Europe. In 2008, 300 000 units were sold in Germany and France alone.
Home heating specialists, Rangemoors are pleased to announce that they are now agents for the advanced SANYO CO2 ECO Heating System, which uses liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) as an entirely natural, non-toxic refrigerant. The heart of the system lies in the compact heat pump unit. Situated on an exterior wall, it is extremely simple to install, uses minimal electric power and is quiet in operation. Liquid CO2 passes through an evaporator absorbing ambient heat from the atmosphere as it evaporates. The gas is then pressurised in an advanced two stage rotary compressor, causing its temperature to rise. This heat then transfers to water in an indoor water tank and the CO2 cools, condensing back into its liquid state. The liquid CO2 then passes through an expansion valve to regain its normal pressure, ready to go through the system again. The water in the tank, now heated to a maximum of 65° C, is ideal for central heating and domestic use. Unlike other heat pump-based systems, the Sanyo air-to-water heat pump delivers water hot enough to be used directly in showers and baths without the need for an electric booster heater. This keeps energy costs and emissions to a minimum.
The system, which comes pre-charged with a green, high efficiency refrigerant (liquid CO2), is extremely easy to install consisting of a single 4.5kW or 9.0kW capacity outdoor heat pump and an indoor tank unit. It connects to all standard radiators and under floor heating systems and can be used as a direct replacement for old central heating and hot water boilers.
Air source heat pumps have a number of significant benefits. Running on electricity means they provide up to a 40% saving on energy bills as there is no need to pay for gas, oil or solid fuels to heat your home. They are much more efficient than electric radiators, are real space savers, requiring no storage room for fuel and are practically maintenance free. Importantly, the increased energy efficiency means a reduction in carbon footprint of the average home of up to 50% .
